We can personally reccommend you on the most efficient and cost effective ways to fly.  If you are local to our surf school in Cromer, Norfolk, we recommend flying with KLM from Norwich Airport.  Even if it slighlty more expensive and a short stop over in Amsterdam, the baggage check in, customs and securty is really quick, relaxed and low stress!  If you are flying from London,  BA have good direct flights straight into Rio de Janeiro.

If you wish to bring a non-surfing friend, husband or wife with you please get in touch!

They are welcome to join in all meals and the non-surfing activities.

We choose the time of year and location of Saquarema based on local knowledge and historical swell. Saquarema is incredibly consistent with surf all year round.  If the waves are are in the thigh to head high range, beginner to intermediate surfers will most likely surf the main beaches of Barrinha and Itauna. If the surf gets over head high on these main beaches then it is possible to surf inside the river mouth with consistent knee to waist high waves.

In the very unlikely event of completely flat waves or stormy conditions, we will offer alternative activities and trips out to help you get the most out of your trip.

We may also adjust the format of the trip. For example, choosing to run more surf sessions on the days that the waves are at their best.

Please visit our T&Cs for more information.

Our surf school partners ‘Escola de Surf’ have 25+ years of local surf experience and knowledge, delivering surf lessons and getting you to the best spots depending on the conditions and your ability.  We chose Saquarema in Rio de Janeiro at these times of the year due to the fun waves and gorgeous weather. Expect waves that are consistently waist to chest high during the summer months of January.  Expect the similat but with bigger swells more likely in the spring time of October and November.

The beautiful long sandy beaches offer peaks for all abilities, the skill is to know which is best on the tide and wind conditions that are on offer. That’s where our local guides are worth their weight in gold.  They will have you in the right place for the best waves for your ability each session.

The water tempertures can flucuate from wearing boardies, swim suit and rash vest on the hotter days.  However, with east swells and wind comes cold water so you will then need to put on a 3:2mm wetsuit.  A full legth is best and gives sun protection, but equally a shortie or long arm/ short leg is adequate.  If you need to buy or hire a wetauit for the trip please come and see us and we can arrange either from our UK based surf school and surf shop.

Brazilian currency is in Real.  It is always good to keep an eye on excahnge rates before you travel.   Brazil accepts all the main visa and mastercard credit and debit cards.  However, exchange rates can often be high.  So we recommend you acquire a WISE online bank card. These can be ordered online and a physical card with you in 2 weeks.  These are great for travelling with as you can easily tansfer money from your UK bank, keep smaller amounts in your WISE account incase of lost or stolen and exchange rates are lower when making transactions.

We reccomend you bring two card options incase one gets blocked by the bank, damaged, lost or stolen.

Bringing a small amount of cash (£50-£75) is always a good option incase cards fail and all Brazilains still accept cash!

If your circumstances change and you can’t join the trip, please let us know as soon as possible via email. Your cancellation notice will start from the date we receive it.

Cancellation terms:

We hold part or full costs, depending on when you cancel:

-If you cancel 12 weeks or more before the trip we retain 50% of the total cost.
-If you cancel with less than 12 weeks before the trip then its 100% of the total cost

Cancellation may fall under the terms and conditions of your holiday insurance policy and you may be able to claim this back.

We recommend you pack light with a small roll on overhead cabin bag.  Check with your airline for specific dimentions but standard are 55x45x25cm.  Also stanard sized back pack for carry small on items.  This way no need for lugging around a large suitcase or waiting for baggage.

General temperatures are between mid 20’s and can get as high as 35 degs in Brazilian summer January and February.  So thin, light airy clothes are best.  You wil most likely travel from the UK with longer trousers and a longer sleeve top, which on the rare occasion you might want to slip on in the evening if there was a cooler storm.   A Brazilian canga or sarong is needed for beach days and pool use.   A sun hat, sunglasses, suncream and mosquioto repelant are alslo essentials.  Flip flops or open shoes are best for day to day use.  A light pair of trainers are also good to have for any day trips and longer walks.

The great news is all clothes shops and super markets are all within a 10 minute walk from our Casa so if you forget anything dont stess, it all available close by! The world famous ‘Havaianas’ can be bought everywhere and half the price of the UK so you can buy extras when you arrive!
